National Park

In contrast with other protected areas in Europe or America, Stelvio National Park means more than wild forests, perennial glaciers or valleys in the wilderness. Its foundation statute of 1935 specifically includes villages, communities, history and the present within “our” Park.

The Trentino sector of Stelvio National Park represents an ideal step towards the discovery of a fascinating environment, from alpine pastures to imposing mountains that, in various time-periods, have fascinated the great explorers.  And then there is the water, the sound of the wind, the many-coloured plants and the wildlife, including red and roe deer, marmots, vultures and eagles, the latter being the unchallenged rulers of this little corner of paradise.

However, there are valleys, villages, works, religious beliefs and migration that have brought new stimuli, thereby creating this distinctive alpine culture.
It is this part of the world, the “real” mountain landscape, together with the “ideal” one, that endows every walk and every path within the Park with real life and culture.
The Park is neither a wild desert nor an empty space to be filled.  It is an intricate series of landscapes, shaped by man and by history, stratified in time.

Visiting the Park, you will get to know fascinating aspects of nature, but also the experience and traditions of many lifetimes that were shaped by communities and man over the centuries.
